Nicholas Becomes a Hurricane, Nearing Landfall Along Texas Coast
Jan 17, 2024 3:32 PM

Nicholas has become the sixth hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season as it nears a Texas Gulf Coast landfall.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded Nicholas to a hurricane as its center was only 20 miles southeast of Matagorda, Texas.

The hurricane watch has been upgraded to a hurricane warning from Port O'Connor to Freeport, Texas.

The center of Nicholas will move ashore overnight. If it remains a hurricane, it would be the second mainland U.S. hurricane landfall of the season, just over two weeks after in Louisiana.

Nicholas has already produced flooding from both storm surge and heavy rain along the Texas coast.
