Winter Storm Frankie Dumps Feet of Snow in the Northern Rockies, Spreads Light Snow into the Midwest, Northeast (RECAP)

At a Glance

Winter Storm Frankie's biggest impacts were felt in the northern Rockies.Feet of snow fell in the higher elevations, accompanied by dangerous wind chills.Frankie's light snow also stretched into parts of the Midwest and Northeast.

Winter Storm Frankiehammered the northern Rockies and Northwest with over a foot of snow, bitterly cold wind chills, evendamaging ice in at least one location Dec. 28 through Dec. 30.

A band of snowfall from Frankie also extended into parts of the Midwest Dec. 29 and Northeast Dec. 30.

Parts of westernMontana and northern Idaho were buried in 2 to 4 feet of snow from Winter Storm Frankie.

In far northwest Washington's Whatcom County, a wind-driven ice storm downed trees and power lines.

West

Winter Storm Frankie brought 4 feet of snow to Saint Mary, Montana, Dec. 28 through Dec. 30 – the top snow total we've seen from the storm.

Frankie also dumped over 2 feet of snow in the town of Seeley Lake, Montana, about 30 miles northeast of Missoula.

Just southeast of Seeley Lake, an avalanche dumped 6 to 7 feet of snow onto Montana Highway 200 between Missoula and Lincoln. One vehicle was reportedly trapped by the avalanche, but , KTVH-TV reported.

This combination of heavy snow and strong winds , according to NorthWestern Energy.

Elsewhere in Montana, Billings picked up 13 inches of snow, and Great Falls tallied 6.7 inches of snow through early Dec. 30.

In parts of northwest Washington, however, ice was a much bigger problem than snow.

Over an inch of ice accumulation, coupled with strong winds, downed trees and power lines in Whatcom County, Washington, overnight Dec. 29 into early Dec. 30, .

Plains, Midwest

To the east, a swath of generally moderate snow blanketed parts of the Plains from the Dakotas into Iowa andIllinois.

A few 6- to 7-inch snow totals came in from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Moline, Illinois.

Generally, 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulated farther east across the Ohio Valley, including the .

Up to 7 inches of snow was reported in parts of Garrett County, Maryland, on Dec. 30. Lancaster, Pennsylvania, picked up 4.5 inches of snow by midday Dec. 30.

A dusting to an inch of snow was reported in parts of northern Virginia on the morning of Dec. 30. The National Weather Service office near Pittsburgh .

Both Philadelphia and New York's LaGuardia Airport measured 0.8 inches of snow Dec. 30, with 0.7 inches at Central Park. Baltimore recorded 0.5 inches of snow, with 0.4 inches at Washington D.C.'s Dulles Airport.
