Winter Storm Diego crippled parts of the southeastern United States as it produced a swath of heavy snow and damaging ice across the region Dec. 8-9, stranding motorists on highways and knocking out power to more than 400,000 at the height of the storm.

Diego's top snow total was 34inches at Mount Mitchell in western North Carolina. Whitetop in far southwestern Virginia had the second-most snow with 24 inches.

The contours show the snow history for Diego in the East.

Officially, 11.5inches of snow was measured in Richmond, Virginia, Dec. 9.That'sthe city's second-highest calendar-day snowfall .

Roanoke, Virginia, reported a snow total of 15 inches Dec. 9 –the city's heaviest calendar-day snowfall for the month of December – with 2 inches of that falling in an hour. Cars were seen off the road on Interstate 81 near Roanoke that afternoon.

Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina picked up 11.1 inches of snow Dec. 8-9, its third-highest December snowfall on record.

Farther east, Raleigh-Durham International Airport received7 inches of snow from Diego, its highest December snowfall total in at least 60 years.

Charlotte, North Carolina, received 2.7 inches of snow/sleet Dec. 9, vaulting the month to the .

Lubbock, Texas, officially received 10 inches of snow Dec. 8, ranking as one of the snowiest calendar days on record there.

Snow and ice also spread toward parts of northern Arkansas, southern Missouri and northwestern Tennessee on Dec. 8 and into that night.

The ice knocked out power and downed treesin Craighead County, Arkansas.

Before arriving in the South, heavy rain and high-elevation snow caused problems in Southern California Dec. 6.

Mudslides and flash flooding forced evacuations and necessitated several rescues while higher elevations in the southern Sierra Nevada picked up 6 inches of snowfall.

Diego also spread snow through the higher terrain of the southern Rockies Dec. 6-7.
