With temperatures well below freezing, 200 Kazakh families travel across the Altai mountains to greener pastures for the Spring. Photographer Timothy Allen followed the Shohan family to capture the 90-mile, five-day journey to Tavan Bogd National Park in Western Mongolia.

Around 200 families make this trip, pushing along about a thousand animals of yaks, goats, camels and eagles—Kazakhs are known for hunting with eagles. All the animals move across the terrain by foot, whereas the families will travel in separate vehicles.

Winters in this region are extremely cold and windy. Summers are short, with high temperatures and an arid climate. The mountains here are a meeting point between Mongolia, Russia and China.

Take a look at the above slideshow for an insider look to their journey across the mountains.
