The Great Wide Open: Incredible Photos of the World's Wildest Places

Horseshoe Bend, Arizona by Joel Bear, a husband-wife adventure photography team committed to capturing the 'roar of adventure.' (Joel Bear/Gestalten)

Whether it's atop a mountain peak in the Swiss Alps or from a kayak paddling beneath waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies, adventure photographers have provided spectacular views of the world's natural wonders.

The new book (Gestalten, 2015) compiles awe-inspiring images from some of the most intrepid adventure photographers for a visual journey through faraway lands, as seen by those who have climbed that mountain and have paddled that lake. The book, which features more than 300 pages of photographs, also tells the stories behind the photographs—tales ranging from conquering the unconquerable to preparing good coffee huddled under a pitched tent.

One of the book's featured photographers,(previously featured on weather.com), who has captured images in below-freezing temperatures and traveled road-less lands to get the perfect shots, hopes to inspire people with his images of the world's wonders.

"I love venturing to remote untouched places around the globe, but also want to add the human element into these locations," Burkard said about his love of adventure photography. "My inspiration is to capture each natural wonder as purely as possible and show them off in a way that inspires people."

German photographer's images of the wilderness of Centra Europe evoke scenes of Brothers Grimm fairy tales, but his aim is for readers to create their own stories.

"There is a deep longing for tranquil naturalness among people in our technology-driven environment," Schönberger told weather.com in an email interview in 2014. "Possibly this is the real benefit of my work: resting places for the eyes in an overstimulated everyday world."
