Washington is home to some of the last surviving glaciers in the United States. In fact, after Alaska, it is actually the second most glaciated state in the country, with glaciers located on nearly every high mountain in the state, as well as all of the major volcanoes. This April, photographer and pilot Jassen Todorov, 41, flew over Washington's national parks to capture stunning aerial images of these natural wonders.

“I love exploring and discovering new areas from above [and] mountains are breathtaking,” Todorov told weather.com. To capture these images, he flew over three national parks known for their glaciers: North Cascades National Park, Mount St. Helens Volcanic National Monument, and Mount Rainier National Park.
“It was breathtaking and totally incredible to soar over these natural wonders," he said. "I have never seen so much beautiful white snow and gorgeous glaciers creating patterns and surreal beauty.”
Flying near or over mountains in his 1976 Piper Warrior plane can be dangerous. “I usually shoot at sunrise or sunset for the best light [but] one must be very cautious when flying in and around mountains as there are occasionally updrafts and downdrafts, as well as turbulence,” he explained, though he added that he was fortunate to get “incredible” weather on his flights.

Todorov’s aerial images of Washington’s parks are a part of a larger project he is working on this year, where he is trying to photograph as many national parks as possible in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.
His aerial photography of the United States has been featured three times before on Weather.com and in 2015, he won a first place International Photography Award, second place in the Sony World Photography Awards, and was named Nature Photographer of the Year.
