There's just something wonderful about picnics. They remind of us simpler times, and they combine sunshine, laughter, and smiles into a memorable meal for young and old alike.
Here's a few things to keep in mind the next time you're inspired to bring together family and/or friends for a picnic:
Cut and divide portions and store food in airtight containers to prevent spillage before leaving the house. Pack garnishes and dressings separately.
Place ice packs in coolers to ensure that food is kept cool and doesn't spoil.
Pack in the opposite order from how you intend to serve. Pack your desserts first, carefully, at the bottom of the basket or cooler, and place the first and second courses on top so you don't have to unpack the entire bag when you arrive. You'll be able to find everything you need, when you need it.
Make sure you have plates, cups and bowls that can safely hold hot items if you are serving hot foods and beverages, including tea or coffee.
Pack a few folding or lawn chairs for older guests, and a folding table to serve as a buffet table if you don't expect picnic tables to be available.
Always pack an extra blanket or two in case the guest list grows, or there are any spills.
Carry sunscreen and insect repellent. When using bug spray, make sure you spray yourselves a few feet from the food, or put it on before the food is taken out of coolers.
Select a location that is level and has some shade. You can park yourselves under a tree or bring a large umbrella to protect you from the sun.
Place leftovers back in their containers, and toss garbage in bins. Don't leave any garbage behind.
Obey park rules regarding outdoor flames, glass, noise and pets.
Do not feed any park animals that may come for a visit. They won't leave.
