Earth Patterns - Images #1: This series of aerial images captures the natural patterns of the planet. (Timo Lieber)
From the Bahamas to the Arctic to the city lights of London, German photographer Timo Lieber has traveled the world in search of interesting patterns for his aerial photography.
“I find aerial photography spectacular, not only in the way it showcases our world from above, but also in how the resulting photographs demand the viewer’s attention,” Lieber told weather.com. “I like simple geometrical patterns in my photographs, and being in an aircraft offers a perfect perspective.”

Over his career, Lieber has worked on six series of aerial photography. Both “Earth Patterns” and “Earth Etchings” focus on the naturally occurring patterns in world landscapes around the world, although the latter is a black- and white-series. “Destruction in Creation” documents the largest open pit mining operations on earth through photographs, while “Best of Summer” is a collection of beach and ocean aerials, “Alpine Runs” captures skiers racing down the slopes of the Alps, and “Lights of London” was shot from a helicopter over the city in the middle of the night.

Because Lieber shoots from planes or helicopters, weather can play a huge role in his aerial photography, determining everything from where and when he can shoot. “If I am trying to shoot underwater dunes in the Bahamas, the best time to fly is around midday when the sun is right up, illuminating all the sand below the surface,” Lieber said. “Whereas for many other flights, I prefer overcast days that provide more muted light.”
“Unlike my pilots, I love those moody days when you can’t quite predict what the weather is going to be,” he continued. “[But] the pilots I work with have to be comfortable getting up in the air.” And it isn’t only snow that can make flying dangerous. On a recent trip to the Alps, he was only able to fly for one hour in a 72-hour period because his plane was grounded due to dangerous winds.
