October Snow Sets Records for Some, and More Is on the Way

Several rounds of snow have blanketed parts of the northern U.S. in recent days.In some areas, it was one of the heaviest October snowfalls on record.Multiple rounds of additional snowfall are expected into early next week.

Snow that has blanketed parts of the northern Rockies, northern Plains, upper Midwest and northern New England set October records in multiple locations, and more snow is on the way through early next week as far south as Texas.

"Snowtables" Since Last Weekend

Minneapolis-St. Paul set the most recent October snowfall record after piling up 7.9 inches on Tuesday during Winter Storm Abigail, as named by The Weather Channel. That's the in the Twin Cities.

It was also the in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where 7 inches was recorded. St. Cloud also set their record snowiest October, topping the previous record of 6.4 inches in 2002.

Both and , Wisconsin, also set their October snowstorm of record Tuesday, picking up 6.9 and 6.1 inches, respectively. Each city also set their record snowiest October.

If that wasn't weird enough, turned skies a tinge of orange and light green over parts of the upper Midwest Thursday as sleet and snow were falling, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Montana has been the hardest hit since last week. Great Falls has picked up 16.7 inches of snow since last Friday and set a number of October snowfall records, including:

-Heaviest calendar-day October snowfall: 8.2 inches Sunday

-Greatest October snow depth: 10 inches Monday, which topped previous record set last year on Oct. 9.

-Earliest-in-season 10-inch snow depth, which beat the previous record set Nov. 9, 2012.

Billings has picked up over a foot of snow since last Saturday. Temperatures the previous weekend there hit 85 degrees.
