Parts of the Northeast have gone a record-long time without an inch of snow on a single day.That's because last winter's snowfall was extremely low compared to average.Average snowfall upticks in December, but January and February are the snowiest months.

Portions of both the Philadelphia and metro areas saw their first snowflakes of the season Tuesday, but a record streak without an inch of snow continues to grow for those cities and some other locations in the Northeast.

S​nowlovers along the Northeast Interstate 95 corridor were starved last winter: New York City saw a seasonal total of 2.3 inches, but not a single calendar had at least an inch. Philadelphia, as well as Baltimore and Washington, D.C., didn't even manage to hit the 1-inch mark for the entire season.

That means many locations haven't seen an inch of snow accumulate on a single calendar day in more than 600 days: These streaks are the longest since the late-1800s in New York (Central Park), Philadelphia and Baltimore (will tie its record Friday). Washington's Dulles Airport has records dating to 1960.

Here's a rundown of the notables through Nov. 28.

A typical snow season delivers five or more 1-inch snow days: S​hown below is the average snowfall each of these locations sees in winter along with the number of days an inch or more of snow is recorded.

As you can see, last season's snowfall pales in comparison to the 1991-2020 averages.

A​re there any prospects for a 1-inch snowfall soon? The short answer is no, since the weather pattern through the first few days of December is expected to produce rain in these areas.

But there's plenty more time to go in this snow season. All of these locations average 2 or more inches of snow in December, but their snowiest months are January and February.
