Neptune Damages Buildings, Snarls Traffic in Mid-Atlantic

Powerful winds from Winter Storm Neptune downed trees and knocked out power to more than 200,000 customers in the Mid-Atlantic, as the region dealt with brutal cold expected to last through Monday.

Across the Mid-Atlantic, Neptune compromised road conditions and led to accidents and damaged buildings Saturday.

Washington, D.C.

A multi-vehicle crash closed the D.C. Beltway early Sunday morning and , NBC 4 reports.

Police say the accident happened on I-495 after midnight and that two EMS workers were injured in the crash. At least one person suffered life-threatening injuries. The inner loop has since been re-opened.

High winds and brutal cold rocked the nation's capital Saturday, damaging power lines and buildings.

According to NBC 4, .

ABC 7 says that part of a building , but no injuries were reported from either accident.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's deployed 200 snow trucks at noon on Saturday.

Bowser declared a cold emergency, which will be in effect through early Monday. Shelters and warming sites will be open.

Virginia

Over 100,000 people throughout Virginia lost power Saturday night, following snow squalls with winds up to 52 mph in some areas, with local station WRICreportingin central Virginia.

Maryland

Icy road conditions caused a , but no one was injured in the accident, ABC 7 reports.

Portions of the Beltway closed overnight as EMS crews responded to crashes.

Highway officials are monitoring more than 400 traffic cameras as high winds, extreme cold and snow belt the state.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issued a reminder to residents of the dangers associated with cold weather hazards.

"There's been a total of 19 weather-related deaths in the state of Maryland, so far," said Christopher Garrett, communications director of DHMH. "We want people to certainly take the cold weather seriously. Be sure to check on your neighbors and family members during the cold."

Garrett cautioned that falls can be life-changing situations for the elderly when temperatures get this low.

"Be sure, if you have some spare time, to run a few errands for them because the elderly shouldn't be out in this kind of weather," he said.

Pennsylvania

On Saturday afternoon, a multi-car pileup in the northwest Pennsylvania, near the New York border, closed down I-90 in both directions.

The accident, involving 107 cars, , but no one was seriously injured, NBC 10 reports.
