Melting Lake Michigan Ice Reveals Historic Shipwrecks

First the ice melted, and then this beautiful sight was revealed.

The U.S. Coast Guard took a helicopter over Lake Michigan and caught a glimpse of a few historic shipwrecks through the clear, blue water.

The aircrew, stationed in Traverse City, Michigan, was on a routine patrol Friday , all of which were taken above the shoreline near Sleeping Bear Point.

One of the ships pictured above, the James McBride, was stranded in 1857, and another called the Rising Sun wrecked in 1917. The Coast Guard couldn't identify the other pieces of wreckage, and asked for the .

For any adventurous history junkies, however, you can look, but don't touch. These wrecks are considered the property of the state and form a sort of underwater museum. .
