In celebration of using 100 percent renewable energy sources to balance its energy use, the LEGO Group has built the largest ever wind turbine made out of its signature plastic bricks. The renowned toy company has reached this milestone three years earlier than it predicted.

The Guinness World Record-winning structure was built after off of Liverpool’s coast in the United Kingdom, according to a release. The site has a capacity of 258 megawatts, which can generate clean power for more than 230,000 homes.

“We work to leave a positive impact on the planet and I am truly excited about the inauguration of the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm,” LEGO Group CEO Bali Padda said in the release. “This development means we have now reached the 100 percent renewable energy milestone three years ahead of target. Together with our partners, we intend to continue investing in renewable energy to help create a better future for the builders of tomorrow.”

The total output from the company’s investment has surpassed the energy consumed at all of its LEGO factories, stores and offices worldwide, states the release. The wind farm is a joint venture between the LEGO Group, DONG Energy and its partners KIRKBI A/S and PKA.

",” DONG Energy chief executive Henrik Poulsen told the Independent. "Pushing innovation in this way reduces the cost of electricity from offshore wind and will help to advance the offshore wind industry across the world."

To further their renewable energy efforts, the LEGO Group will install 20,000 solar panels on the roof of its factory in Jiaxing, China, according to the release. These will produce almost six gigawatts of energy annually, which is equivalent to the use of more than 6,000 households.
