Late-November Snow Blankets Northeast, New England
Late-November Snow Blankets Northeast, New England
May 15, 2024 1:55 AM

Pennsylvania Snow

Early Tuesday afternoon, Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel stood in a snow-covered yard in Reading, Pa., delivering positive news.

"The really nice thing about this snowfall across the Northeast and New England today is, basically, it's not sticking to the roadways in most areas," he said.

While the wet snow left roads slick and slushy in areas seeing the heaviest accumulations, cars and buses were able to navigate with very little trouble during the workday. This snow event, as it pushed into New Jersey and eventually New York City and Connecticut, seemed to be mostly cooperative with workers in the early-going.

However, the system continues to dump snow on areas that have seen multiple inches already, and while ground transportation was largely unaffected, airports began to rack up delays. Incoming flights to Newark International in New Jersey averaged delays of nearly two hours, and Philadelphia International -- on the rainy side of the storm -- had delays approaching two hours as well. Arriving flights to La Guardia Airport in New York was averaging delays of at least an hour by late-afternoon Tuesday.

"Through midday Tuesday, we've seen a general 1- to 3-inch snowfall across most of Pennsylvania, starting to spread across southeastern New York into southern New England," said weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. "A few spots just northwest of Philadelphia have seen 3 or 4 inches, so at this point the snow event is panning out very close to our expectations -- a broad zone of light snow with a narrow stripe of slightly higher amounts in the southeastern half of Pennsylvania."

In already-battered New York, still picking up the pieces from Superstorm Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked landlords to speed up repairs on the 800 apartment buildings still lacking heat, according to a News 4 report. The same report said more than 6,000 private homes in New York City still don't have power in the wake of the storm that hit a month ago.

The heaviest of the snow Tuesday afternoon and evening is expected to dodge the NYC area, according to Weather Channel Winter Weather Expert Tom Niziol.

"I think higher amounts are going to occur in that area from northern New Jersey through southern Connecticut over the next couple of hours," he said.

The snow is expected to end in parts of Pennsylvania before the evening, but in the areas north of New York City, driving home from work may require additional care on the roads.

"Certainly there's going to be some freezing on the roads tonight into tomorrow morning, and that's a concern," said Weather Channel meteorologist Carl Parker.
