It's Still Snowing in Eastern Canada and More Snow Is Possible Here and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains This Weekend

Portions of eastern Canada looked more like winter this week.More snow is possible into this weekend in eastern Canada and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Yes, it's late May and it's still snowing ineastern Canada and more snow may fall this weekend in both Canada and the U.S.

An unusual out-of-season snowfall resulted in some unbelievablepictures in Newfoundland and New Brunswick this week.Although snow in May does happen here, this is a rare snowfall so late in May.

It quickly turned from spring back to winter, especially in portions of Newfoundland where more than a foot of snow accumulated.

The snow was caused by an upper-level trough or southward dip in the jet stream that moved over eastern Canada midweek, which allowed chilly temperatures toslide south. In addition, a low pressure system and its cold front dived southeastward through New Brunswick and Newfoundland bringing precipitation and .

As a result of the cold temperatures,some of the precipitation fell as snow in New Brunswick and into central Newfoundland Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, light snow coated the ground in portions of , including Bathurst where (6.8 centimeters) was reported according to Environment Canada.

Then, Wednesday into Thursday Gander, Newfoundland measured over 13 inches (35 centimeters) of snow which is more than the there this winter.

The snowfall at Gander International Airport is also the second largest May snowfall on record and the biggest so late in the season, according to with Environment Canada.

In addition, a of just under 8 inches (20.2 centimeters) was set in Gander for May 23.

Gusty winds also accompanied the snowfall, reducing visibility and adding to the wintry feel.

The wintry conditions caused several schools to close in central and western portions of Newfoundland Thursday. While many are ready for summer, there may be a few out there that are enjoying one last snow day.

There is even a chance of some additional light snow Friday night into Saturday morning in parts of Newfoundland, including Gander.

Another area that may see some snowfall late this week is the higher elevationsof the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, as an upper-level trough of low pressure moves into the West.

Several inches of wet snow is possible in the Sierra above 8,000 feet through Saturday. The National Weather Service in Sacramento notes that slippery driving conditions are possible at pass levels.

This pattern will also bring colder-than-average temperatures to California Friday and Saturday. Those planning to hike or camp in the higher elevations this Memorial Day weekend should plan for chilly conditions and snow showers.
