It's June and There Is Still a Pile of Snow in This Wisconsin City

The record-warmth in May has helped many to forget the incredible snowy and cold conditionsApril brought to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, but in Appleton,Wisconsin, an impressive snow pile remains in early June as a reminder.

In this city of about 74,000 residentsabout 30 miles southwest of Green Bay,snow that wascleared from a parking garage remains ina ramp where it was dumped over the course of season.

Thesnow pile resulted in large part due to the record-breaking snowfall in April. Appleton received 26.7 inches of snow from November 2017 throughMarch 2018.

Then April brought anunusual weather pattern. Astrong southward dip in the jet stream over the eastern half of the U.S. resulted inmuch-colder-than-average conditions east of the Rockies.

The bitter cold was accompanied by rounds of snow,as well. was the heaviest April snowstorm on record in Green Bay, Wausauand Minneapolis/St. Paul. Blizzard conditions hitGreen Bay.

In Appleton, Xanto brought 21.2 inches of snow from April 14-16. The snow didn't completely melt at the official reporting station until April 25.

Snowfall in Appleton, Wisconsin from November 2017 through May 2018. Seasonal average is based on 1981-2010 data.

April 2018 broke the record for snowiest April in Appleton with a total of 30.8 inches, well-above the April average of 2.4 inches. In fact, April 2018 is also the second all-time snowiest month on record, with the top spot heldby December 2008 at 47.2 inches.

The record-setting snowfall in April pushed Appleton to a seasonal snowfall total of 57.5 inches, notably above the average of 44.6 inches.

The jet stream pattern did change in late April, bringing warmer conditions. across the U.S., althougha brief chilly spell brought a trace of snowfall to Appleton on May 12.

A heat wave at the end of May causedtemperatures soarinto the 90sin Appleton, where it reached95 degrees on May 28. The average temperaturefor May here was62.5 degrees, more than 5 degrees above average. That was almost 30 degrees warmer than the average temperaturein April of 34.7 degrees, which wasmore than 10 degrees colder than average.

As for the snow pile? It has melted a little more,but it's still more than a foot high, says, a meteorologist at WFRV-TV Green Bay.

June's warmer temperatues should eventually make it a distant memory.
