Eerie Images of New York Buildings Left to Rot
Eerie Images of New York Buildings Left to Rot

Will Ellis' work is inspired by the history of New York and the city's rapidly changing culture and architecture, buildings lost to time and the elements.

"Few cities in the U.S. have the depth of history and the worldwide influence of New York," Ellis told weather.com. "In New York City, the local is global—people around the world connect with it as a center of cuture and commerse, and I think to see this side of it is really surprising for most, especially now that it's changing so quickly, that we've lost so much of the grit that once defined the city."

A fan of horror films, Ellis was first attracted to the eeriness of abandoned buildings three years ago.

"As a photographer, you find a very particular quality of light in abandoned buildings you don't get elsewhere," Ellis said.

Ellis eventually began to take his project to a deeper level by digging through New York Times archives to research the history of the buildings he documents. He has also taken photos of places in New Jersey, upstate New York and Pennsylvania

"I'm always fascinated with how these buildings are so in sync with the weather– the feeling of a space completely changes from one season to the next," he shared. "So I try to get out to the same locations at different times of the year to see interiors covered with snow, or vines or dry leaves. I'm always crossing my fingers for fog, it really suits the subject."
