Many of us dream of taking an epic road trip across the United States, but one couple is not only currently fulfilling a dream, they are breaking records with a remarkable journey.

and Heather Thompson started their trip in Arizona in July with the goal of driving through 48 contiguous states. OnSeptember 20, they broke the world record for longest road trip in one county, surpassing the record of 22,406.66 miles set back in April by four men driving through India.

The couple has since covered 31,000 miles and they have traveled to 22 national parks including Glacier National Park, Zion National Park, Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite National Park in 103 days.

Cayea, 32, told weather.com in an e-mail from Birmingham, Alabama, he has been traveling his whole life, and has taken six-month road trips since he was 15, but he wanted to do something different. "I felt like this time, because my travel tolerance was so high, I had to really do something insane to get me excited," he said. "I pitched it to Heather while she was on break at her work ... and she was game and off we went."

Since taking off on their record-breaking trip, the couple has driven along some of the country's most scenic routes. According to Cayea, there favorite experiences so far have been driving from Big Sur to Forks, Washington along Highway 1/ US 101, driving along the Snake River in Idaho and the Bear Tooth Pass leaving Yellowstone into Montana. He also cites the Black Hills of South Dakota,Alpine, Texas, Ashland, Oregon, Biloxi, Mississippi, Crater Lake National Park and Highway 50 ("also known as The Loneliest Highway in the world also known as The Extraterrestrial Highway") as favorite places.

Their least favorite? "South Texas," Cayea said. "Too many bugs. Too much humidity. TOO MANY BUGS."

Bugs and weather were very important factors on the trip, especially because the couple has been sleeping on an air mattress in the back of Cayea's 2008 Subaru Outback.

"At the beginning of the Summer, the Pacific Northwest was perfect," Cayea said. "Beautiful weather: not too hot, not too cold, low humidity, we slept with the back door open it was so nice."But then in central California, from Redding to Death Valley, temperatures reached 120 degrees. "One day it was 122. Horrible. Phoenix and Yuma, Arizona as well, during the day, brutally hot. At night… perfect."

In North Dakota, specifically in windy, rainy Williston, getting the car ready at night proved to be particularly difficult. "The wind was blow the rain at the speed of light and it was freezing," Cayea said.

While the couple had to contend with external factors that may affect their trip, Cayea admitted they also had to struggle to work on their relationship while traveling together on such a long trip. "We were fighting about everything but we decided to commit and make it work," said Cayea. "Gradually, we learned more and more about each other—what time of day each other was cranky, what little things ticked us off, and so we quickly put some systems into place and all of a sudden, we realized we were enjoying each other's company again and we've been madly in love since—not that we weren’t at the beginning, but you know what I mean."

Cayeas tip when traveling with a loved on? "Drop it. Don't hang onto anything and remember, at the end of the day, you love each other," he said.
