When you think of Iceland, you’ll most likely imagine their iconic black sand beaches or stunning sunsets seen within an ice cave. But around 1,640 feet above southern Iceland’s shores, you can find another natural wonder of colorful rivers.

“This fantastic combination of colors and patterns is incredible, and it’s probably not possible to see anywhere else,” photographer Sergey Aleshchenko said. His images reveal vibrant colors that mimic watercolor paintings. Bright hues of orange and blue, flowing through intricate braids as they pass through volcanic rock sand, eventually leading into the sea. He described it as the most amazing thing for him to see.

In order to capture the view, Aleshchenko flew around Iceland in a small Cessna aircraft with a local pilot. “[Iceland] is a paradise for all the photographers who get there to take stunning landscape pictures that are largely untouched by people,” he said.
