Cold East vs. Hot West: A Nation Divided by Weather

With nearly two months already in the books for 2015, the weather across the nation surely feels dichotomous.

Current Temperatures

On the one hand, record breaking temperatures have created warm and dry conditions throughout much of the West. On the other, record breaking temperatures have created very cold conditions for much of the eastern half of the country, as well as record shattering snowfall amounts for portions of the Northeast.

Sweltering West

During much of February, record-breaking high temperatures graced the majority of the West Coast as well as the Rocky Mountains.

"Winter seems to have completely forgotten about us out here," Kathie Dello, deputy director of the Oregon Climate Service at Oregon State University, . "If we could find a way of sending [the Northeast] snow out here, we'd really, really appreciate that."

- its their record high of 78 degrees, and Reno had its warmest Valentine's Day on record (as well as a record high) when the thermometer hit 72 degrees. (60 degrees)and (56 degrees) broke is daily high temperature records on Valentine's Day as well.

- The basin is also experiencing record high temperatures during Valentine's Day weekend. UCLA reported a record high of 86 on Feb. 13, and Santa Maria Airport tied their record high with 84 degrees on Feb. 13.

Many throughout the West are counting their blessings, if not humble bragging about their comfortable weather.

Eastern Freeze

Arctic blasts have bombarded the Midwest and Northeast since the middle of January, and the has brought record cold temperatures that have not been experienced in over twenty years.

Much of the East, including Florida, was as much as 20 degrees below average this week. For example, Pensacola topped out at a brisk 53 Wednesday, 11 degrees below average, after a frosty morning low of 29.

, the Windy City has not had a high temperature below 10 degrees this late in the winter since 1963. And on Wednesday, Chicago's high was only 8 degrees. The average high for Feb. 18 in Chicago is 36.

Atlanta woke up to a frigid 15 degrees on Thursday morning. By afternoon, "Hotlanta" experienced a record low high when the thermometer failed to top 28 degrees. In addition, northwest winds gusting as high as 35 mph made for wind chills that at times dipped below zero.

Further north, . In fact, Boston is experiencing its snowiest February of all time, and the city has picked up nearly 98 inches of snow this winter. Here is how they are handling the frosty situation:
