China is known for insanely congested traffic—in 2015, thousands of commuters were stranded on a massive in Beijing that made the news around the world. So it's not surprising that Chinese officials have been looking for ways to alleviate traffic. In May, a concept for a bus so large and high that it can straddle congested streets and glide over traffic was . This week, that concept got one step closer to becoming a reality.
The makers of a futuristic vehicle, known as the Transit Elevated Bus (TEB), in northern China's Hebei province on Tuesday, according to Xinhua News Agency. The inaugural run of the bus, which is 72 feet long and 25 feet wide, gave the makers the opportunity toevaluate the braking system, drag and power consumption.

The bus'elevated body can fit 300 passengers and it allows cars to pass under the bus, allowing for regular flow of traffic. Up to four of the TEBs can be linked together, providing the potential to transport , according to NBC News.
"The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space," the project's chief engineer, Song Youzhou, told Xinhua. One TEB could replace 40 conventional buses, according to the firm that helped build the vehicle. It is not known when the vehicle will be widely used in Chinese cities but it has already attracted interest from governments in Brazil, France, India and Indonesia, according to Xinhua.
