Deep in the USE desert near Abu Dhabi, away from light pollution, people can tilt their heads up to find a sky full of stars.

Cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai have erected modern skyscrapers that rival others in the world, and the current world’s tallest is, in fact, located in Dubai and stands at 2,717 feet.

Despite the modern architecture and luxurious scenes often associated with cities in the United Arab Emirates, people can find solitude in the deserts.

“The beautiful thing is that ,” Hasan Ahmad Al Hariri, CEO and founder of Dubai Astronomy Group, told Time Out Dubai. “We are people who are looking for dark locations. Light pollution kills us, so we are always running away from the light.”

One of those running away from the light include Dubai-based photographer Sebastian Tontsch. He traveled to the desert to capture the twinkling stars that shine over the vast sand dunes. The darkness and unpolluted night sky make the Milky Way visible. “It’s an empty desert with no light pollution—it’s one of the darkest spots in the UAE,” Tontsch said.
