"It's fantastic that people visit protected areas so often, and are getting so much from experiencing wild nature," said lead author of the study, Cambridge University Professor Andrew Balmford.
The study authors say that the billions of visits could generate as much as $600 billion of tourism expenditure annually, a huge economic benefit that far exceeds the less than $10 billion cost of maintaining these sites.
