Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is run by astronomers Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell. As its name would suggest, and boasts the largest collection of annotated astronomical images on the Internet to date.

Nemiroff and Bonnell created the website in 1995. Nemiroff is a professor at Michigan Technological University. Bonnell is a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Many of the photos are from NASA, while others are user-submitted. Photos range from images of nebula to photos of the International Space Station to photos of the Aurora borealis from Earth. that accepts donations for Nemiroff and Bonnell's website. Friends of APOD also sells calendars with APOD photos, and offers downloads of the calendars for free.
