Located in deserts, near craters and between cliffs, America is home to some airports in beautiful – and unusual – places. Jassen Todorov, 41, owns a 1976 Piper Warrior plane and flies about twice a week to capture spectacular aerial photography. As a result, he flies into several small – and unusual airports – for his shoots so he decided to turn his camera to some of these places.

“As a pilot, I spend a lot of time in and around airports [and] some of them are tucked into very unexpected places or are shaped very interestingly,” Todorov told weather.com of his decision to photograph these airports. “Many of them are really interesting. Lone Pine airport has incredible scenery looking straight into Mount Whitney [and] Lee Vining airport is not only remote, but it is located next to some awesome craters.”

Also memorable to him was the Shelter Cove airport, where deer could be seen walking between the parked planes. However, one airport stands out to Todorov the most. “Landing in the sands of Nevada’s Black Rock desert (Burning Man) was probably the most unusual [as] the sand runway is a temporary one and is only in operation during the festival.”
