From the rugged landscapes of Ireland to Battle Harbor on the Labrador Coast of Canada, Wales-based photographer has captured some stunning destinations around the world, giving himself to immerse himself in the culture and landscape of each place.

Early in his career, Beales worked as a staff photographer for an international arts festival, Hay Festival, that had a number of overseas events that would run over a three-day weekend, giving him only 72 hours to photograph the place.

“The job took me to many different countries around the world with a brief to capture a sense of place as well as the event as well,” Beales told weather.com. “[And] the ’72 Hours in…’ project was born out of those initial trips abroad with the Festival and has now morphed into a sort of ongoing diary.”

Today, Beales travels all over the world to take photos for clients, travel firms and tourist board, and at each place, he tries to create a series, or narrative, with his photos taken over 72 hours.

“I enjoy documenting something using a series of images, creating context by shooting incidental moments that work together with seller images to develop a narrative or storyline,” Beales said. “It’s this that helps establish a sense of place, especially important when overseas and the audience is back home.”

On his travels, Beales has shot in all kinds of weather, from misty mornings to thunderstorms.

“I like to shoot in really bad weather and have made some of my favorite photographs in really appalling conditions: gale force winds, thick snow blizzards, driving rain,” Beales . “It’s never as bad as it seems once you’re out in it and the resulting pictures can be far more dramatic.”
