20 Amazing Hot Springs to Visit Around the World (PHOTOS)

Heated by nature and open to the public, there are many hot springs all over the world that offer locals and tourists alike great places to go to soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters and relax. Many of these geothermal springs are even rumored to have healing powers, offering relief for such things as achy bones, digestive problems or skin ailments.

Some of the world's best places to take a dip including not only the famous Blue Lagoon in Iceland, but alsoSaturnia's springs that were first used during the Bronze Age and Greenland’s Uunartoq springs that offer soakers stunning views of icebergs and whales offshore.

One of the places most famous for its hot springs is Japan. There are more than 3000 of these springs, called “onsen,” scattered across the country - which is more than anywhere else on earth, according to Lonely Planet. One of the most famous of these springs is (meaning ‘treasure river’), which is made up of many slate-floored pools spanning the side of the river. Its warm waters are said to , reports Lonely Planet.

Another spring not to miss is Jinata Onsen, an open air hot spring at the bottom of a cliff that faces out towards the sea. Located on the little island of Shikine-jima, hot water sprouts out from the seaside rocks to form this warm pool, which is only accessible when the tide is right.

There are also some incredible hot springs right here in the United States. Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, the smallest national park in the country, is home to 47 thermal springs. On the border of the park there is ” - that were constructed in the 1900s as a health spa. Meanwhile, in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies, Dunton Hot Springs is a restored ghost town, home to five different hot spring pools. The springs are both indoor and outdoor, with , according to the Travel Channel.
