Warmer Side of Winter Storm Diego Triggers Flooding, High Winds, Tornado

At a Glance

Charleston, South Carolina, experienced street flooding downtown. An EF1 tornado caused damage in Florida's Pasco County.

The warmer side of Winter Storm Diego brought heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms to many parts of the Southeast over the weekend.

South Carolina

Roads and low-lying areas of downtown Charleston were as rain coincided with high tide, the Post and Courier reported.

River flooding was the worry in the Midlands part of the state. A flood warning remained in effect the State reported.

Florida

In Florida, an EF1 tornado caused minor damage in Pasco County on Sunday morning. Several trees were knocked down, including one onto a car, in, according to Pasco Fire Rescue. Falling tree limbs also knocked down a power line.

Thunderstorms continued to move across the Florida peninsula for much of the day.

The day before, flash flood warnings were issued for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in the Panhandle. The Florida Highway Patrol said numerous roadways were flooded.

Georgia

A large tree crashed through the roof of a home in Gainesville, Georgia, Sunday morning.

Tameka Williams told WXIA-TV, " and it was loud and it was a crash," she said.

Williams said the tree, which damaged the home's rafters, isn't the first to fall on the house. The first was during Hurricane Irma.

"Lord Jesus, why me," Williams said.

Flood warnings were issued for several rivers, including the South, the Oconee, the Etowah, and the Conasauga.

Alabama

Much of central Alabama faced flash flood warnings on Saturday.

Heavy rainfall caused WPMI reported. The rain also caused sewers to overflow, Mobile Area Water & Sewer System said. More than 55,000 gallons were spilled.

Gusting winds knocked down dozens of trees in and around Birmingham.

Louisiana

A number of lakes and rivers were nearing flood stage on Sunday after a day of rain on Saturday.

Texas

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said two men were killed Friday in a multi-vehicle crash on Beltway 8 near Wallisville Road in northeast Harris County. The highway was temporarily closed in both directions at the height of rush hour.

Earlier in the day, weather forced a ground stop at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Seven flights were diverted to other airports. Even after the ground stop was lifted, arriving flights were still being delayed up to an hour and 15 minutes.

High water rescues were also reported Friday in Houston and San Antonio. Numerous roadways and highways in eastern Texas were impassable at times due to the flash flooding.
