Robertson,69, of Garland, Texas, was reportedly driving the limo too fast for the on Texas Route 198, about 50 miles southeast of Dallas, ESPN reports. The limoskidded on the wet surface of the dark, rural highway, ran partially off the roadand was hit by two other vehicles.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
Robertson was taken to an area hospital in Athens, Texas, where he later died. The drivers of the other two vehicles were reportedly uninjured.
Robertson was at Grand Prairie High School earlier in the evening to give a speech at a banquet for the football team, thereports.
Robertson was drafted by the from Southern University in the first round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He remained with the Rams until 1978 before playing for the from 1979 to 1982.
