‘Unacceptable’ TSA Lines to Last Well Into Summer
‘Unacceptable’ TSA Lines to Last Well Into Summer
Jan 17, 2024 3:40 PM

If those vexing airport security lines had you sprinting through crowded terminals only to arrive at an empty gate, you’re definitely not alone, but you also might experience that frustration again.

Across the country, the lines at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints are getting longer and longer and, unfortunately, they show no sign of shrinking.

During the most popular days of spring break almost 6,800 American Airlines fliers were left grounded after long TSA lines kept them from reaching their planes in time, according to Fox News.

"The lines at TSA checkpoints nationwide have become unacceptable," said Ross Feinstein, an American Airlines spokesman. "The result: our customers are waiting in TSA lines greater than one hour.”

"As we approach spring and summer, we are concerned that these lines will grow even longer,” Feinstein added.

The lines will continue to grow as a result of a failing formula — an increasing number of passengers and decreasing number of TSA officers.

Nearly 700 million people are expected to shuffle aboard planes this year, a 7 percent jump from the number of fliers in 2015, says the Department of Transportation.

TSA, on the other hand, has only 42,500 officers to screen the nearly 2 million travelers that remove their shoes, jackets and hats every day, which is the administration’s lowest number of officials in half a decade, according to a TSA report. Those 42,000-plus officers are responsible for checking 1.2 million checked bags and 4.4 million carry-ons daily.

“This is one of the highest-volume travel years we’ve ever seen,” TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger told the Washington Post. “That means we’re going to have lots of people moving through the airports.”

Neffenger’s solution to the growing dilemma?

“Get to the airports early, because even if I can move you efficiently through the line, you’re still going to find long lines there.”
